It's a well-known question without a clear answer: Do we have free will? The reason for the unclear or unsatisfying answers is that the question has some flaws. The question is based on a vague assumption of 'we'. Really we need to know who 'we' are, then we can look at whether 'we' have free will.
The usual assumption is that 'we' are humans. But if you understand enough of what I've written previously this won't be a surprise: we are not humans. The 'human' is not really defined, as it is a flowing, changing quality of planet Earth and the universe. The 'human' is not separate, and although seemingly distinct, it is not truly distinct from the universe. If we trace inward to the core of our being we find that we are not 'human'. We are the same Infinite One Consciousness that is the nature of all seemingly separate beings.
So this separate individual 'me' can never be clearly defined. It is a flawed identity. Our true nature is limitless Consciousness. So instead of asking, "Does Helen decide what drink she will have?" it could be worded as, "Does Consciousness decide what drink Helen will have?" It's still a bit flawed, because 'Helen' isn't really precise and accurate, but we'll go with that.
In answering this we have to recognise that the flow of thoughts in Helen's mind decides what drink she will have, based on tastes and preferences developed through the human experience. Taste buds, availability, and life events all come into play for this simple decision. So it seems wrong to say that Consciousness is making the decision. Maybe if Helen's mind was pure and clear, untainted by thoughts, then Consciousness would shine through in all Helen's actions, including choices. For example, instead of Helen choosing coffee with three sugars based on an addictive preference for coffee and sweetness, a drink of water may be more conducive to Helen's health. Consciousness would have no preference as such, but the natural flow would be more in line with the true nature of Consciousness lighting up the human experience with love, goodness, peace and wellbeing.
So generally the mind plays a part in choices. The mind thinks that it is a separate identity making choices. But really there isn't a true identity, and what choices seem to be made are influenced by the flow of experiences. In other words, just as the 'human' is a flowing quality of the planet, so are the choices that the mind seems to make. It is all the flowing of the universe. There is no true division to enable us to say 'I' chose 'that'. There is a play of choice, an illusion of a chooser choosing choices. Truly there is only Consciousness.
But Consciousness is certainly free. There are no true boundaries to Consciousness. Consciousness is freedom itself. Consciousness doesn't choose, restrict, deny or allow. It just is what it is. What appears, appears. We're getting to the deeper questions of: Does Consciousness create the world, does it co-ordinate what happens in the world, and does it pre-ordain events to happen in the world?
Again we have some flaws in the questions here. There is an assumption that there is a 'world', but there is only Consciousness. There is an assumption that events really happen. Consider this: it would be wrong of someone to say, "I flew to the moon last night whilst I was sleeping." We know that it was a dream of flying to the moon - that didn't really happen. It is similar with the appearance of the world - it is like a dream within Consciousness. It doesn't really happen. There is no space or time for things to travel and change. Nothing ever happens.
So in an absolute sense, there is no choice, there is no choosing, because nothing ever happens. Consciousness just is what it is. This is the Absolute Truth, where no movement or change happens. Realise that so-called beginnings rise out of Infinity, and so-called ends return to Infinity, all the while being Infinity. So to say that Infinity begins or ends something is flawed. There is only ever Infinite Consciousness.
But we can make a concession, a step down from Pure Truth to relative truth, and say something to satisfy the mind somewhat. Well, I'll give it a try anyway. The appearance of the world arises in Consciousness, made of Consciousness, perceived by Consciousness. It is Consciousness that allows this appearance by means of opposites as if the Singularity of Consciousness splits into opposites and multiplies. As part of this splitting, the opposites of Creation and Destruction arise from the Singularity simultaneously. So although Consciousness/God doesn't make anything happen, from the human perspective it can appear that Consciousness/God created the world, whilst seeming to destroy the Singularity.
But the opposite forces we perceive as separate are not really separate. The world isn't created and the Singularity isn't destroyed. The force of creation/will that seems to make things happen is cancelled out by its opposite, destruction/restriction. Everything that seems to be done must be undone, so the nature of the Singularity remains. This is the Law of Opposites that applies to all aspects of the appearance of the world. The Singularity of Consciousness/God remains as it is. The appearance of the world of multiplicity is illusory.
So, to answer the question: Do we have free will? There is no 'we', no separate individual that makes choices. There is no will to do something, because nothing really happens. But there is freedom. Freedom is the pure nature of our Infinite Being.

In a previous article it was discussed how evil appears in the world. Let's take a brief look at this again and consider the laws that maintain balance in the universe. Essentially evil appears in the world of opposites as the reflection of the formless Singularity. It can be considered that the world appears as an interplay of opposites, as a separation of the formless Singularity, the Infinite One Being. As the world 'materialises' far from the source, it appears as a hardened, limited, separated multiplicity of forms - the opposite of the Infinite One Singularity.
The ego develops far from the Singularity as the sense of 'I am this, not that', a limited sense of self separate from others. The extreme of the ego is what we call 'evil', where it is so hardened and isolated, and has such a strong sense of its own identity different to the world that evil actions are the outcome. The evil ego is the opposite of the Infinite One Being, imagining itself as separate from others, far from the goodness and peace of the Oneness of Being.
This evil ego and indeed all egos are illusory. They are a mistaken sense of identity within the Singularity of Being. There are not many beings, just one infinite Being. But the world appears through the method of this reflection into opposites. When one of these apparently separate beings realises its true nature there is no longer a sense of separate self. This is what we call enlightenment, where the apparently separate self is extinguished (nirvana) and the pure Infinite Being is effectively realised, although here all along.
You have likely heard of Karma. This arises as a consequence of actions from the Law of Opposites. The Law of Opposites is the universal law that is naturally active in the world, as the world appears by this method of reflection and separation into opposites. The Law of Opposites ensures balance in the universe. What appears must disappear. What is done must be undone. This happens naturally due to the reality of the Singularity, which can never be broken. The Singularity can only appear to be broken in two, and if this is done it will inevitably be undone, as the reality is maintained. It may be that through the appearance of space and time the Unchanging Formless Being appears as changing form, but this must be resolved with the closure of space and time back into the Singularity from which it appears to have come.
In practical terms for humanity and the evolution of souls this means that actions must be undone. This is what we call Karma. Any separation caused by a soul in its human form must be resolved or cancelled out. Any harm to the Oneness must be resolved. Any division in the One must be mended. For the soul that means that any harmful actions that caused division between itself and the world must be undone. The soul must mend this separation of the One. The soul must return to the Oneness from whence it came, and in so doing put the wrongs right. Karma.
That is the play of the world of opposites anyhow. But the underlying reality is the timeless Singularity. There are not multiple souls that go out and get lost far from the Oneness of God. There is only the Oneness of God. This is why it is said that in self-realisation or enlightenment the soul is freed from karma. From the perspective of the soul it returns to the heart of Oneness and resolves the separation it caused. From the perspective of Oneness there never was a soul and there never was separation. The world is a play of opposites in the Infinite One Being.

The Non-Duality understanding clearly explains the reason for humanity's dissatisfaction with life and search for happiness. Desire arises as a consequence of the sense and belief of being a separate individual in the world. This is not who we really are. Reality is an infinite, indivisible Singularity. This is our true nature, our true Being. So when the mind identifies as a limited separate being, it will inevitably feel incomplete. It will never be satisfied. There will always be something missing. It will never be content.
On a lower 'physical' level the human body is somewhat incomplete and needs sustenance from the environment. There is a human urge for union with another human, primarily for the purpose of procreation, but humanity has evolved beyond the need to just survive and procreate. The human mind has evolved. Desire has evolved in the mind, arising from the sense and belief of identifying as a separate individual. This apparently separate individual has wants and desires beyond the 'physical' needs of the body. The mind itself is seeking the peace of union. Reality is Oneness, so this sense of being separate brings with it the feeling of being incomplete, wanting without satisfaction, and ultimately suffering, not being content.
The mind that identifies as separate will initially look outwards for what it feels it wants and needs. It tries to find satisfaction in the world. People look for love, search for happiness, use substances to give some relief or escape from this yearning and unfulfilled desire. They occupy themselves with things to do, to keep the mind from falling into loneliness and yearning for something. This is an understandable search, but ultimately nothing lasts. This is where the mind turns to spirituality, and spiritual teachings that say to practise meditation to bring about peace.
The mind seeks to end its suffering, and after trying to find peace and happiness in the world, it turns inwards to find peace in itself. Meditation seeks to calm the mind. In calming the mind, a clarity is found, a peace and contentment. Without the mind's chatter, and ultimately without the mind's sense and belief of being a separate individual, there is no sufferer and no suffering. The body may encounter pain still, but there is only an experience of this without the mind's sense of suffering.

Okay, this is probably a contentious issue, but let's explore the reality and existence of God. Firstly, there are many different perspectives of what or who God is, and some would say there is no God. The problem is there isn't really a fixed consensus on a definition of God. The most common concept of God is that 'He' is the creator of the universe, He lives in a heavenly realm and He is benevolent and intimate to all creation, bringing comfort and answering prayers. This concept of God usually has Him pictured as a bearded man. Some religions, current and ancient, have numerous gods, but there is often a single God figure that is the chief of these. He also is often depicted as a man.
In Non-Duality there are not many beings, so there isn't really a God that is chief of others. There isn't a God that creates a world separate from Himself, where there are lesser beings. In the Advaita Vedanta tradition there is only God, or Brahman. The true nature of all apparently separate beings is Brahman. The Self of all selves is Brahman. Your true nature is Brahman. My true nature is Brahman. There is no truly separate me and you. There is just Brahman, and this appearance of separate beings and what seems to separate them is wholly Brahman. Brahman, or God, is the Infinite Indivisible One Being.
So it's not a God that is a man with a beard, although it is respected that some humans or beings may reach that point of Self Realisation in which they do not identify as a separate being, and so they can be considered God in human form. It's not strictly correct, but essentially the God nature shines through the human form that is not attached to limitation and separate identity. In this sense we could say that Buddha was a God Man, although Buddhists wouldn't traditionally believe in God.
This is where the subtle understanding of the nature of God comes in. Some have turned against the idea of a benevolent creator God, because there can seem to be little evidence of this in a harsh dangerous world. But if God is understood as a Singular Being in whom the universe appears as if it is a multiplicity of separate forms, then who can deny the existence of God? To put it another way, if God is understood to be an Infinite Being, then there is nothing other than God. God has no boundaries. God isn't really a man or a humanoid type figure.
In Non-Duality God is the Infinite Indivisible One Being in whom the universe appears. The universe is like the broken body of God, split into pieces and scattered. The parts of the universe are inevitably less than the One Being, or so they seem. But truly the One Being remains eternally unchanged, being beyond space and time, yet encompassing all apparent space and time. God is Omnipresent, because in truth there is nowhere other than Here. God is Eternal, as there is truly no time other than Now.
Is this Infinite One God benevolent? Does this God help humans? Well, yes and no. This Infinite God does nothing, goes nowhere, as there is nowhere and nothing other than God. This Infinite God is the Whole, Complete, Love, Life, Peace, Harmony, Permanence, Oneness. All the best qualities that we know of are so because of the nature of the Infinite One God, who is Reality. The world appears by contrast to God, in that it seems to be a World of Opposites. God's Oneness is contrasted by the illusory appearance of separation and many. All that relates to separation is the opposite of God and Reality. God (or Reality) is Infinite Oneness.
God doesn't really step in and help humans directly, because God is the universe itself, including all appearances of forms apparently past and future. God takes no sides. Yet the true nature of the Oneness of God can come through into the human world. We know this as love, human warmth and kindness, equality, fairness, peace, safety, belonging, help, togetherness, selflessness and wisdom. Each human can choose to follow this way or turn from it. Following it is the Way of Oneness, turning from it is a way of selfishness and separation that leads to the opposite of God. Or so it seems.
Truly there is no opposite of God. God is the Whole, a complete Singularity. There is no other. There are no limits that divide. There are no opposites. There only appears to be a World of Opposites. This World of Opposites is none other than God, the Infinite One Being, expressed by contrast. So the way of selfishness and separation leads to ignorance, darkness, and confusion. Selfishness and separation is a mistake. It is the mistaken belief that there is anything other than God. There is only the Infinite One Being.

The forms on this planet, the formation of the planet and the formation of stars and this apparent 'material' universe don't just happen by chance. There is an underlying unseen spiritual energy that gives rise to these forms. The Eastern images of the dragon give a good impression of what this living energy force is. It's like a dragon that coils and releases, gives heat and cools down, condensing and expanding, flowing with undulating vibrancy. It links well with the Yin and Yang symbol, as the play of opposites is its power. It is like an alive energy force flowing into the 'material' world and receding, in repeating waves.
Let's start with this planet. The condensation of matter is the condensing of spiritual energy into an apparently hardened more defined form, where this alive spiritual energy slows. Matter is effectively spiritual energy condensed. This alive free energy becomes condensed to a more limited, dull, hardened, rocklike form. But there continues to be expressions of variation in this energy. We see this as the range of density through the traditional elements of earth, water, air and fire.
This vibrant alive energy continues to influence forms on the planet, evolving them from the basic to the advanced. Patterns appear in nature because of this underlying force. Branches reach out and multiply. Leaves unfurl. Flowers open and close. Animals form, ranging from dense cold-like forms, such as the alligator that needs to bask in the sun to get energy from that fiery source, to the hot-blooded, supple, vibrant mammals, such as the cheetah. These animal forms are full of this unseen energy, and are effectively expressions of this underlying spiritual energy that creates them.
This undulating spiritual force animates the flow of the universe, giving rise to the ebb and flow of nature, the separating and uniting of opposites, the condensing and unfurling, spiral patterns, and the pattern of many opening from one and returning to one.
What is the source of this spiritual force? It is the secret egg from which it came. The mystery of the Yin and Yang symbol is that they are timelessly one. This force of interacting opposites is a play within the Oneness of What Is. What is this 'What Is'? It is that in which all this is experienced - Consciousness. Nothing is known outside of Consciousness. Consciousness is the same as spirit. The energy and life of spirit is the aliveness of Consciousness. The spiritual force of fluctuating opposites arises as the reflection of the Oneness of Consciousness.
